Identify progress in moving beyond the fundamental problems There are changes that insurance companies must undertake, not just to survive, but to succeed in todayââ¬â¢s market. One of those changes is how the business manages risks. Risk management was listed by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, as one of the top insurance industry issues for 2013 (Top Insurance Issues, 2013). Purpose: Research has been consistent regarding the interpersonal relationships of narcissists. Several lines of research on dating relationships suggest that narcissism is linked to lower relationship commitment which can cause relationships to function less effectively. Exploitation of Women in Music Essay Example For Students
Exploitation of Women in Music Essay In popular music today, there is a significant increase in sexualized representation of women. There are many social and political implications when listening to songs on the radio, online, on TV, etc. There is a lot of talk about whether this hyper-sexualization is empowering or exploitive. There is also conversation to be had about masculinity and how men in music have power and control over female bodies. The female body is somewhat of a performance site through which male dominance is subverted. It is a tough conversation surrounding which examples of popular culture are empowering to women in the sense that they are claiming their bodies to reconstruct gender identity and sexualization or if dominant male forces and cultural ideologies always counter this. By using textual analysis and ideology, I looked at examples of popular culture such as music videos and song lyrics. There are examples of empowering sexualization in this new feminist era such as Beyonce and Nicki Minaj, but I will focus on exploitation of women bodies by male artists. Most representations and portrayals of women in music are sexualized and exploitive. Some music videos in popular culture featuring a male artist take advantage of women and assert power and control of their bodies. Music videos are now central to popular culture and media industries. Instead of just playing on MTV, music videos have spread to airing on multiple channels as well as across musical genres. ââ¬Å"They have moved from the margins of the culture and relative innocence to its very center and itââ¬â¢s caldron of controversy around the nature of the sexual imagery that came to define it as a genreâ⬠(Sut Jhally, Dreamworlds 3). When looking at music videos, I took a textual analysis approach. I looked at how certain music videos conveyed specific ideologies of gender and sexuality. Douglas Kellner, author of ââ¬Å"Cultural Studies, Multiculturalism and Media Cultureâ⬠defines ideologies as ââ¬Å"ideas or images that construct the superiority of one class or group over others and this reproduce and legitimate different forms of social dominationâ⬠(Kellner 13). While keeping this in mind, I looked at two recent music videos. Maroon 5 released a music video to their new song ââ¬Å"Animalsâ⬠in September. The lyrics are extremely interesting and problematic in the sense that they describe a stalking situation in which Levine sings, ââ¬Å"Baby Iââ¬â¢m preying on you tonight / Hunt you down, eat you alive / Just like animals, animals, like animals-malsâ⬠(Maroon 5, Animals). Also in the song, Levine sings about a woman who wants to stay away from him, but canââ¬â¢t because her attraction is too strong for him to handle. The music video portrays Levine as a meat butcher where a customer (that he stalks in the video) comes and orders meat. Levine is seen outside the customersââ¬â¢ apartment taking pictures and he has a whole room set up with pictures of her he has taken. Levine is also covered in blood and hanging out in a dark, gritty room with slabs of meat hanging from the ceiling. Later in the video, Levine approaches the customer at a bar and she rejects him, leading to a fantasy montage of them in bed together, naked and kissing. This music video is a negative portrayal of women as it sexualizes stalking and exploits a womanââ¬â¢s body. The group is using the idea of animals as a metaphor for hetero-normative desire. However, this ideal paired with the videoââ¬â¢s stalker fantasy, the audience can determine the message as violent where the female object of Levineââ¬â¢s desire is threatened, endangered, and powerless. This is just another man in popular music assuming he already knows what a woman wants and that she needs him. With the stalking complex on screen, this reinforces male dominance. Plenty of music video in popular culture perpetuate male dominate and hyper-sexualize women and the lyrics that go along with them are as, if not more, disturbing. Music created by male artists exploit and sexualizes womenââ¬â¢s bodies when the lyrical content includes sexual assault. When looking at lyr ics, I looked at Croteau and Hoynesââ¬â¢s ideas surrounding ideology. They define ideology as ââ¬Å"a system of meaning that helps define and explain the world and that makes value judgments about that worldâ⬠(152). They go on and say how ideologies donââ¬â¢t have to reflect reality accurately and can often present a distorted version of the world. ââ¬Å"When Marxists speak of ideology, they often mean belief systems that help justify the actions of those in power by distorting and misrepresenting realityâ⬠(153). Basically talking about what these messages tell us about our society. Eminem recently released a new track titled ââ¬Å"Vegasâ⬠. The verse mentioned Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, and alluded to rape. Also Eminem has rapped that he would like to ââ¬Å"punch Lana Del Ray right in the face twice like Ray Rice,â⬠(Eminem, Freestyle Rap). These lyrics make it seem like rape and sexual assault is acceptable in this society. This belief system that rape is acceptable justifies the actions of Eminem because he is in power, distorting and misrepresenting reality. Eminem is reinforcing the belief that rape is acceptable by using his power in the entertainment industry and popular culture. The lyrics are exploitive to women because they objectify and degrade the woman body. Rape is also about control and controlling women in music is also exploitive of women. Another example of rape in musical lyrics is Robin Thickeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Blurred linesâ⬠. The lyrics glamourize violence against women and reinforce rape myths with examples such as ââ¬Å"Nothing like your last guy / He donââ¬â¢t smack that ass and pull your hair like thatâ⬠(Robin Thicke, Blurred Lines). These lyrics objectify and degrade a womanââ¬â¢s body by using misogynistic language and imagery. If the lyrics are more closely looked at, there are certain lines that are explicit examples of sexually violent activity that reinforce victim blaming, such as a woman giving ââ¬Å"mixed signalsâ⬠through clothing and behavior. These lyrics also make it seem like rape and sexual assault are acceptable in this society, so artists keep singing about it and people in are society keep committing acts of sexual assault. This belief system that rape is acceptable justifies Robin Thickeââ¬â¢s song because, like Eminem, he is in a powerful position in the entertainment industry and popular culture. There are masses of people that listen to his music for the sake that it is a catchy song and do not realize the harmful lyrics that accompany it. Without critical analysis of his lyrics, people of this society will continue to see rape and sexual assault as acceptable. ââ¬Å"Blurred Linesâ⬠is also exploitive to women bodies in the sense that he is using them as objects. Thicke doesnââ¬â¢t think what he is singing about is wrong and he doesnââ¬â¢t consider how the woman feels in this situation at all. This is a highly sexualized song, but not in an empowering way. Thicke probably thinks the song is empowering for women because there are definitely good examples of taking back sexualization such as Beyonce and Nicki Minaj. Thicke songs ââ¬Å"tried to domesticate you/ But youââ¬â¢re an animal, baby itââ¬â¢s in your natureâ⬠(Robin Thicke, Blurred Lines). Motivator and Hygiene Theory The idea of job enrichment was first developed by the American psychologist Frederick Herzberg (1966, 1968). Hygiene factors which are in the organizational context are pay, company policy, supervisory. In this theory, Herzberg argued that improvement in the hygiene or context factors will remove dissatisfaction, but will not increase motivation and performance. The hygiene rewards are more intended to the extrinsic rewards, but the intrinsic rewards are more important influences on the motivation to work. As a result, a manager cannot only use the single theory to evaluate the adaptability but should care about the real working situation of the staff. The job characteristics model is designed by Richard Hackman and Greg Oldham (1974; Hackman and Purdy, 1975). There are mainly four factors which are implementing concepts, core job dimentions, critical psychological states and personal and work outcomes and one very important indicator which is employee growth need strength (GNS). This model sets out the links between the features of jobs, the individualââ¬â¢s experience, and the outcomes in terms of motivation, satisfaction and performance. This model also takes into account individual differences in growth need strength (GNS), a concept of self-actualizationââ¬â¢. Dreams Essays (944 words) - Dream, Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Sleep Dreams DREAMS Dreaming is an experience that has fascinated people for a very long time. Although researches about dreams have been limited in the past, it has developed tremendously in its field of science. There are many explanations why people dream, but there are three main theoretical explanations for why there is dreaming: the biological view, the cognitive view, and the psychoanalytic view. I will be assessing a dream of my own, using all three perspectives. All three views have been debated thoroughly in the past, but it is the psychoanalytic view that has created the most attention to me. In the end, I will show why I find the psychoanalytic view most valuable. I recently had a very simple dream of going fishing with my dad at a lake. The dream was very vivid, in that I went through a series of steps. The initial step was setting up the fishing gear, the second step was the actual fishing, and the last step was catching fish. I frequently have this dream and it has reoccurred throughout my life. Maybe dissecting my dream with these three theories will help explain why I dream of this so frequently. Perhaps one of the most important discoveries for neurobiology of dreams occurred in 1953. It was the discovery of the rapid eye movement(REM)(Piero, 3). REM is a stage of sleep marked by rapid eye movements, high frequency brain waves, and dreaming (Huffman, 144). It is this stage that influenced the coming of the first theory I will talk about, the biological view or also known as the activation-synthesis hypothesis. It was Alan Hobson and Robert W. McCarley in 1977, who showed that most physiological and cognitive characteristics of REM sleep are associated with the same brainstem physiological control system that activates body and mind in the waking state (Antrobus, 2). In other words as certain cells in the sleep center of the brain stem are activated during REM sleep, the brain struggles to make sense out of random stimulation by manufacturing dreams (Huffman, 147). So when I dreamt of fishing on a lake with my dad, my brain was just processing an experience when I was in my w aking state. This seems logical because I frequently go fishing, therefore explaining why I would dream of this particular situation. The second theory explaining dreams is the cognitive view. The cognitive view states that dreams are a form of information processing, that help people sift and sort our experiences, solve problems, and think creatively. That dreams are an extension of everyday lifea form of thinking during sleep (Huffman, 150). One way this view may be applied to my dream was that my brain was trying to solve a problem. The information that it is trying to sort out is how to catch a fish in my dream. It is very clear the steps that I go through are in order to solve a problem. It goes through clear steps of special techniques while fishing and certain setups of the fishing line. These two are very important while fishing that could be the difference between having no fishes to a lot at the end of the day. This would explain why I am constantly dreaming of fishing. I am trying to figure out how to catch a lot of fish. One of the oldest and I find most interesting theory is the psychoanalytic view or called wish fulfillment theory. This theory was presented by Freud, which suggests that dreams are disguised symbols of repressed desires and anxieties (Huffman, 149). What I find interesting about this theory is how it believes that dreams have a direct relationship with peoples wishes. Unfortunately, most people focus on the content of dreams than the form of dreaming. This would impact Freuds work because scientist were looking for the meaning, rather than for the source(Piero, 3). I find this theory most valuable because if the source is suppressed anxieties, and the dreams help your body relieve some, it is very important or else one might have a breakdown. The Consequences of the Norman Conquest William of Normandyââ¬â¢s success in the Norman Conquest of 1066, when he seized the crown from Harold II, used to be credited with bringing in a host of new legal, political and social changes to England, effectively marking 1066 as the start of a new age in English history. Historians now believe the reality is more nuanced, with more inherited from the Anglo-Saxons, and more developed as a reaction to what was happening in England, rather than the Normans simply recreating Normandy in their new land. Nevertheless, the Norman Conquest still bought many changes. The following is a list of the major effects. Anglo-Saxon elites, the largest landholders in England, were replaced by Franco-Normans. Those Anglo-Saxons nobles who had survived the battles of 1066 had the chance to serve William and retain power and land, but many rebelled over contentious issues, and soon William had turned away from compromise to importing loyal men from the continent. By Williamââ¬â¢s death, the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy was all but replaced. In the Domesday book of 1086, there are only four large English landowners. However, there may only have been around 25,000 Franco-Normans out of a population of two million when William died. There was not a massive importation of a new Norman population, just the people at the top.Much of the upper reaches of church government was replaced. By 1087, eleven of fifteen bishops were Norman, and only one of the other four was English. The church had power over people and land, and now William had power over them.Castles: Anglo-Saxons did not, in general, build castles, a nd the Normans started a huge building program in order to help secure their power. The most common early type was wooden, but stone followed. The castle building habits of the Normans has left a mark on England still visible to the eye (and the tourist industry is thankful for it.) The importance of receiving land from a lord in return for loyalty and service grew enormously under the Normans, who created a system of land tenure unmatched in Europe. Quite how homogenous this system was (probably not very), and whether it can be called feudal (probably not) are still being discussed. Before the conquest, Anglo-Saxons owed an amount of service based on regularized units of land holding; afterward, they owed service based entirely on the settlement they had achieved with their overlord or the king.The idea that a person held two types of land ââ¬â his ââ¬Ëpatrimonyââ¬â¢ / family land which he had inherited, and his extended lands which he had conquered ââ¬â and the idea that these lands could go to different heirs, came into England with the Normans. Familial relationships, of heirs to parents, changed as a result.The links between Scandinavia and England were deeply severed. Instead, England was brought closer to events in France and this region of the continent, leading to the Angevin Empire and then the Hundred Years War. The room that is me ââ¬â is decorated with beautiful coloured pictures. The walls are a blend of some colours I do not know the names of. The furniture that is placed in the length and breadth of the room consists of small round tables to seat four children on each table, and the chairs are also tiny. That is not all, all the furniture is a mixture of many colours. When the children come inside the class they almost fight to sit on certain chairs. That makes me understand that they like the colours and fight for their favourite colours to sit on. At the top two ends of the length of the classroom there are two bigger tables and full size chairs for the teachers to sit. Since there are so many children there are two teachers while in other classes there is only one each. I am a treat for everyone to see. My pleasure knows no bounds when everyone who comes inside the class, admires me, appreciates my get up and the colours that don me. I have the twin advantage of being the most beautiful room in the school and also having the cutest of children coming to spend their time with me. Thus, my life is full of beauty, colour, noise and laughter and at times of course also crying and howling of the children. At times some new entrants to the school come to me with their mothers and, cry as if they had come to the slaughter house to be butchered. At such moments even by heart cries for the little ones and I wonder why man makes these little children come to study if they do not want to. I of course do not know how important studies are for human children, I only feel sad seeing the children cry. My life is full of a very busy schedule though very interesting. The routine of my daily life is so busy that, I do not get any relief for quite long hours. In the morning as early as 6 a. m. wo sweepers come open the lock of my room or rather me, and off they start working on me. They sweep my floor, squab it, dust each and every piece of the furniture in me. Thus, I get alerted as soon the room is unlocked. It is not even 8 a. m. when the little brats start pouring inside my bodyââ¬â¢s doors. At times they enter with so much noise that my whole body feels the rattle of it all. Their movements are so loud that now, I cannot even think of any rest. School bags get flung, tiffin boxes are strewn all about, water bottles are kept just anywhere and there is a lot of commotion all over. Soon the maid enters the room and keeps everything in order and my appearance at once improves and I look tidy and well kept. For these small ones the school hours are just three from, 8 a. m. to 11 a. m. These three hours is my duty time, and just is the time when I also get the dayââ¬â¢s entertainment. Being a classroom for the Kindergarten children I get a great chance of hearing conversations between the teachers and the parents. Since this is the first time their children have entered school, parents devote a lot of time to talking about the school and its standards. At times I find that some parents are just too critical and, inspite of getting all the best in this school they always seem to be unhappy and dissatisfied with something or the other in the school. Such parents keep lecturing about things missing in the classroom, the school or even in the playground. When I hear such complaints, my heart sinks and I wonder if they will allow or not allow their children to come to me any more,. For such conversations I have understood that, these days parents pamper the children too much, and it seems that they can never yes, never be satisfied. I am quite surprised to see the vast difference in opinions. While on the one hand I, and also many parents think that I am very beautiful, well kept, and decorated, others of the same clan are always complaining of many defects in my appearance. This gives me a feeling of depression and I do wonder if I can do anything in the matter. After some thinking bouts, I realize that, I can do nothing to satisfy these unhappy parents. I am just here in the hands of the school authorities and stand here as and how they keep me. My working hours are just six, from 6 a. m. when sweepers enter to say 12 noon when I am locked after all children go. After my duty hours I just relax but also feel lonely. No matter what is said about me, I am thoroughly enjoying my life in the cute company of little children. Their company makes me also feel young though now I am quite old. Every summer vacation I am painted afresh, my furniture is painted, and, I am ready to welcome my little friends, new and old with a new look, new enthusiasm and renewed vigour. I pray that my life is forever allowed to remain so interesting and so relaxed. I just love all the children and teachers who come here to me, to work and play in the restricted area within my four walls.

Does Coriolanus make mistakes or errors in judgement that lead to his downfall? Essay
Does Coriolanus make mistakes or errors in judgement that lead to his downfall? If so, what are they and how did they lead to his downfall? The play Coriolanus concerns the downfall and eventual death of a Roman general turned politician, Cauis Martius (later given the name Coriolanus after conquering the city of Corioles). Equipped with the traits of a brave soldier, a short temper and arrogance, these characteristics aid in his downfall which was also aided by several other factors. Whether it be a mistake or an error in judgement on Coriolanusââ¬â¢s side, it is the result of either one which causes trouble for him. After announcing that he is reluctantly joining the senate, his mistakes and errors in judgement along with the rest of him would be publicly scrutinised, questioned and judged before the public. He lost the advantage of making mistakes and errors in judgement in the course of war where they would most probably end in his own death or personal injury. Additionally they would be looked at as victory scars or and as a mark of heroism rather than a result of a foolish and rash decision.It comes down to the fact that he would not have to answer for his mistakes in war as opposed to his mistakes against the plebeians who are not particularly fond of him. Coriolanus, though he is brave, ferocious and strategic in the context of war where the consequences of miscarried and miscalculated actions do not bring great effect, he is helplessly out of his element when his mother Volumnia coerces him into politics. ââ¬ËI have lived to see inherited my very wishesâ⬠¦. only thereââ¬â¢s one thing wanting,â⬠¦.but which our Rome will cast upon thee.ââ¬â¢. Running for consulship was clearly a mistake, because firstly, he has no desire for it, ââ¬ËThough he obeys his motherââ¬â¢s wishes and dons the gown of humility. It is clear through his thinly veiled contempt for the people he is unsuited as he regards them as ââ¬Ëhares, geeseââ¬â¢, unworthy animals. Wholly unsuited for a career in politics due to his arrogance, brutal honesty, tactless manner and moreover his inability to conceal his true self and to pretend to care for the well being of the plebeians, Coriolanus himself said so, ââ¬ËWould you have me false to my nature, Rather say I play the man I am,ââ¬â¢ Though he stands for himself, his own idea backfired and it resulted in his banishment. To call Coriolanus obeying his mothers orders a mistake would be inaccurate as he is predisposed and psychologically unable to refuse her demands. It is fair to say that Coriolanus relentlessly seeking for her approbation aids in his downfall. Going against his wishes to satisfy her wish for him to fight for his place in the consul by humiliating himself further; apologising to the plebeians. She, (Volumnia) says to Coriolanus, ââ¬ËTo beg of thee is more my dishonour than thou of themâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢. She gives up and plays the role of the disappointed mother and Coriolanus caves in. ââ¬ËPrithee mother, pray be contentâ⬠¦ chide me no moreâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ Though he would certainly be aware that listening to his mother was a mistake if her were not so dependent on her approbations and love. Though not a clear cut mistake, it certainly aided in his downfall. Coriolanus certainly obtains some time away from the influences of people when he is banished. He arrives at Antium, where he is prepared to die at Aufidius hands for all the harm he has done, ââ¬ËIf he slay me, He does fair justiceâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢. Though he goes on to say, ââ¬Ëif he give me way, Iââ¬â¢ll do his country service.ââ¬â¢ he switches his allegiances to Aufidius. This was an independent decision where he was influenced by his countryââ¬â¢s hatred for him and it lead him to serve another country whose wish is to destroy his home. This portrays Coriolanus as a vengeful, hateful and hyper aggressive as his first task is to seek revenge by destroying Rome, the city who did not fully appreciate their hero. This is not entirely a mistake as he would have gone through with his plan if not for him obeying and pleasing his mothers wishes which often carry dangerous consequences. This was more of an error in judgment as he depended on his dejection, rejection and anger to govern his decision to join Aufidius in order to be against Rome. He fails to see his tether to Rome; his family and to a certain degree, his father figure, Menenius. At their profuse begging for mercy upon Rome he complies but at the cost of his life. The fatal ending of his life stems from his being independent in deciding to fight Rome but his tether to it prevent him from his plan of joining Aufidius and being a great soldier. It also leads him to a death as a traitor at the hands of his jealous ally who was playing second fiddle to Coriolanus. It further reminds Aufidius of his losing to Coriolanus and this has placed him in the line between ally and enemy, one of his officers even say, ââ¬ËAnd you darkened in this action sir. Even by your own;ââ¬â¢ By being the great soldier he is he has subtly wounded the ego of his ally who is second to him as a soldier and a leader. He was unaware of Aufidiusââ¬â¢s wounded pride after beating him in battle, 5 times. The signing of the peace treaty with Rome pushed him into being a traitor in Aufidius eyes and those of Antium. After a heated verbal confrontation between Coriolanus, Aufidius and his conspirators, Coriolanus is killed. It is fair to say that Coriolanusââ¬â¢s actions affect the most influential people in his life, and events. His being a good obedient son to a domineering, persuasive mother lead him to the event that highlights his flaws as his primary characteristics; the event being running for consulship. His inability and refusal to veil his hatred for the plebeians who are so easily influenced lead to his banishment. In the end, in him ââ¬Ëplaying the man am I amââ¬â¢ a great soldier, prompted envious and jealous feelings in his ally who later did not need much to kill him. Coriolanusââ¬â¢s mistakes and errors in judgment were all leading to his eventual death due to him being governed by negative people, like his mother. Also negative emotions; his arrogance, and pride which refused and was unable to control due to his nature of seeking pleasure in violence, anger and was in full accordance of his warped upbringing by his war-hungry mother who has only projected maternal sense.

1. A growing number of Americans work for foreign-owned firms in the United States. Do you think that these American employees are being influenced by the foreign ownerââ¬â¢s approach to management and the culture of the country of the owner? Because of globalization, businesses are open to do business in new markets and improving profits. Also because of globalization, companies are faced with different cultures, religion and norms. For a company to do business in another country, a manager needs to understand the differences associated with the host country. ââ¬Å"Globalization is defined as this interdependency of transportation, distribution, communication, and economic networks across international bordersâ⬠(Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske, 2012, p 57). Each firm has their own organizational culture. According to Hellriegel, Slocum and Woodman (2001), organizational culture represents a complex pattern of beliefs, expectations, values and behaviors shared by organizational members. The knowledge of the culture in which an employee is working is crucial. ââ¬Å"In a dynamic and fast changing environment the inter and intra organizational behavior changes the productivity and growth trendsâ⬠(Chat urvedi, 2002). Because of the organizational culture most foreign-owned firms will tend to impose that culture on their employees. Just like U.S. companies settling abroad, foreign-owned companies will face some difficulties operating in a country with different culture. Based on Hofstedeââ¬â¢s research, which studies how values in the workplace are influenced by culture, four dimensions have been ââ¬Å"identified as explaining: Uncertainty avoidance: ââ¬Å"degree to which people are comfortable with ambiguous situations and with the inability to predict future events with accuracyâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 69). Masculinity-Femininity: A culture that has a high masculinity orientation tends to emphasize on dominance, assertiveness, and interdependence. A culture with tendency of femininity orientation will emphasize more on interdependence, compassion, and emotional openness. Individualism-Collectivism: ââ¬Å"Tendency of a cultureââ¬â¢s norms and values to emphasize on satisfying individual needs or group needsâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 69). Power distance: ââ¬Å"Degree to which members of a society accept differences in power and status among themselvesâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 69) Because each culture fits differently in the four dimensions, a foreign-owned firm will keep its own culture as it will be easier to deal with than having different organizational cultures in each country it operates. Americans who work for those companies are indeed influenced by their approach of management. 2. Assume that you want to develop your global skills so that you can pursue international assignments with your company. Team-building skills: Companies require more and more that their employees know how to work as part of a team. Team-building is a way to have more done more efficiently. A manager should know how to delegate work and know what each team members can or cannot do. Organization skills: It is important to know how employees react to certain management approach. McGregorââ¬â¢s motivational theory X and Y provides management approaches that can apply to motivate employees. Communication skills: Communication is essential when working abroad. It is imperative that a manager or employee be able to communicate with peers and superiors effectively. Transfer of knowledge skills: ââ¬Å"Learning about a practice, technique, or approach in one country that can be transferred elsewhere is a skill that managers can apply on a regular basisâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 62). 3. Describe the attitudes a manager would need to be successful and effective in managing in India, China, and Saudi Arabia. A manager would need to have the same basic skills in order to a successful and effective manager in India, China, and Saudi Arabia. According to Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske Strong technical skills Good language skills Strong desire to work overseas Knowledge of the culture Well-adjusted family situation Spouse support Behavioral flexibility Adaptability Good relational ability Stress management skills According Goodall and Warner (2007), a manager who wants to work in China would need to be: Open-minded to the culture shock. Desire to learn the language and culture. Good communication skills. Strong organizational commitment: ââ¬Å"Think not what your company can do for you, but what you can do for your companyâ⬠(Goodall et al., 2007, p 13). In China, it is hard to retain employees due to the competition of labor. China does not have enough skilled labors and is experiencing tremendous growth economically. To be an effective manager, one should be able to retain employees and adapt to the culture in order to not lose such precious asset. According to Bhuian, Al-shammari, & Jefri (2001), a manager needs have a strong organizational commitment, strong desire to work with foreign assignment, and especially good communication skills in order to work in Saudi Arabia. Trainings should be available to the expatriate manager. Gibson et al. identified three steps: ââ¬Å"Predepartureâ⬠, which helps the manager prepare for the culture shock. Overseas Assignments, which is to help the manager ease into the culture. Having a mentor or a guide to introduce him or her to the culture. Xi displays his survival skills to the modernized parties and the film ends with a happy reunion between father and his two sons. Being a relatively primitive society, they seem to worship the sky and believe that the jet lanes in the sky are roads made by the gods who were very kind to drop for them a Coca-Cola bottle.
